What is Playback Theatre?
Playback Theatre is an improvisational form of theatre in which people share real-life stories, and a team of actors, musicians, and facilitators improvise the essence of those stories on the spot using movement, voice, and dramatic forms. It is spontaneous, powerful, deeply human, and can be both healing and transformative. Playback Theatre is practiced worldwide in artistic, educational, therapeutic, and community settings.
About the Core Training
This 3-day intensive training is designed especially for people new to Playback Theatre.
You will learn to listen deeply, tell stories, and transform those stories into improvised theatrical pieces. Together, we’ll build skills in: Voice and movement work, Ensemble play and group improvisation, Playback theatre forms, Embodiment, emotion, and presence, The arc and atmosphere of a Playback performance.
We’ll focus on creating a safe, playful, and creative space where all participants feel supported and seen.
By the end of the training, you will be ready to participate in a full Playback performance with the group.
No previous experience in theatre or improvisation is required — just your curiosity and willingness to explore stories together.
About the Facilitator:
Hane Alrustm is an Accredited Trainer in Playback Theatre by the Centre for Playback Theatre in New York, USA. He is a psychoanalyst with a focus on Lacanian psychoanalysis and a theatre maker with a Master's degree in Theatre Studies, specializing in theatre as a tool for social change. Hane is also a committed human rights activist and the founder and director of Healing on the Move, a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to making mental health support accessible to survivors of war and displacement.
